Dr. Moon Kim Seminar

On Wednesday, December 7th, from 2-4 PM, Dr. Moon Kim came to the Magellan/Venture Port office to give a seminar on 'How to Present to U.S. Venture Capitalists'.

I had met with Dr. Kim several times previously to arrange the event, and the seminar turned out to be a huge success! Representatives from between 30-40 companies attended the event, and everyone involved was very pleased with the result.

Some of the key topics from the seminar were:

  • The key 'must have' elements in a pitch
  • What VC's need to know
  • Which red flags to avoid
  • What makes a company successful
  • What is an angel investor and why
  • VC structure
  • VC funding stages
  • In the VC meeting
  • What do you have (intellectual properties, book keeping certification, etc)
  • Practical tips for Korean businesses (do's and don'ts during a VC meeting)
  • Future road map
  • Getting an expert's help

Dr. Kim met a number of companies during the event, and we are in the process of arranging further 1on1 pitches between him and a number of key companies (including Logicplant, Apex CNS, Humanpass, WE Interactive, Add2Paper, etc) at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in Samsung-dong where he is staying. The presentations will probably take place during the morning of Friday, December 9th.

Seoul Foreign Investment Forum/KT Olleh Venture Awards

On Tuesday December 6th, I attended two events.

The first was the Seoul Foreign Investment Forum held at the Seoul Foreign Correspondents Club on the 18th Floor of the Seoul Press Center in Gwang-Hwa-Moon.

I had helped SBA and the Seoul Government edit some of the English documents and presentations for the event. The event had speakers from the Foreign Investment Ombudsman's Office and the Seoul Global Center. The material of the seminar included Seoul's recent efforts to attract and keep foreign companies in the city. To that end, the Ombudsman's Office had made some significant improvements and solved a number of problems facing foreign companies.

Also, the Seoul Global Center's Director Alan Timblick gave a short speech about the initiatives and programs his office had put in place to help foreign companies grow.

The presentations also covered the three new district building projects: the Yeuido Financial District, Digital Media City, and the Maggok Biotech area. Overall, the event was very informative about Seoul's recent attempts to improve their overall international competitiveness.

The next event I attended was the KT Olleh Venture Awards, also in Gwang-hwa-moon. I went there to support Haena Jun of Add2Paper, where she won 2nd place in the competition!

Her idea for her new project called 'Goorum' received 2nd place and 20,000,000 won at the competition.

Harbor Pacific-Dr. Moon Kim Meeting

Yesterday, November 30th, I met Dr. Moon Kim of Harbor Pacific at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in Samsung-dong, Seoul. Dr. Kim is a venture capitalist/CEO/consultant based out of Palo Alto, California.

During the meeting (which included Magellan CEO 인철유), we discussed Dr. Kim's trip to Korea. Dr. Kim is giving lectures and seminars at government functions and universities; the main topic of his seminar is 'How Korean Companies can Receive U.S. Investment'. In Korean:
We presented Dr. Kim with a list of companies who are interested in receiving U.S. investment. Also, we confirmed Dr. Kim's plans to give a lecture at our Nulitkum Square office in Digital Media City.
Dr. Kim will do a seminar at our office on December 7th, at 1 PM. After the hour and a half seminar is finished, he will meet and listen to presentations from some companies 1-on-1. Because not every company will get a chance to present to him after the seminar, he mentioned some companies can come to his hotel on December 8th and 9th to present to him at a conference room there.
